Fast Five Fiction: New Years books

It's FRIDAY and time for Fast Five Fiction.  Each week I share five fiction books: new books, notable books, books around a common theme. Since we're approaching the new year, this weeks roundup features some New Year's themed favorites.

Snow Horses: A First Night Story by Patricia MacLachlan

From Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan comes a cozy picture book of love, light, and community during New Year's and taking the past with us as we step into the future, brought to life with tender and intricate cut paper illustrations.

On the very last evening before the new year, when the snow is falling soft and thick, two black horses wait for the jingle of their sled. As they ride about town, they will spread light to their beloved neighbors, bidding farewell to the last night--and saying hello to the first morning.

Hap-pea All Year! by Keith Baker

Hap-pea January!
Let's get going,
grab your mittens--hooray, it's snowing!

The peas have rolled through the letters, numbers, and colors. Now, they're back with all of their signature jaunty and joyful perfect-for-preschoolers energy to take young readers through the calendar. With bouncy rhyming text and playful pea-packed illustrations, celebrating the months, the seasons, and the holidays has never been so fun!

Squirrel knows that New Year's Day is a great day for making resolutions! But what does it mean to make a resolution, anyway? As she makes visits around the forest she learns about New Year's resolutions and helps her friends get started on theirs. If only she can think of a resolution of her very own.

Slappy New Year by R.L. Stine

Take a little Horror home with you! Ray Gordon loves to scare his younger brother, Brandon. It's not hard considering Brandon is terrified of everything--loud noises, roller coasters, and especially the wooden dummy, Slappy, that Ray got from Jonahttan Chiller's HorrorLand gift shop. In order to throw his big New Year's Even party, Ray's parents make him promise to leave Brandon alone. But strange, mean-spirited things keep happening to his little brother, and Slappy always seems to be around for it. Could those words Ray read out loud actually have brought the dummy to life?

Happy New Year, Julie! by Megan McDonald

Julie knows the holidays will be difficult this year, but when her sister Tracy refuses to go to Dad's house for Christmas, Julie feels as if her family is falling apart. Julie finds comfort spending time with her best friend, Ivy Ling, whose family is getting ready for Chinese New Year. When Julie?s whole family is invited to the Lings' New Year banquet, Julie worries about how they will get along. That night she discovers that they all have a chance at a new beginning. The "Looking Back" section explores Chinese New Year traditions.

Happy Friday and happy reading!
