Audiobooks definitely count as reading! You're just reading with your ears instead of with your eyes. There are a ton of great advantages to listening to audiobooks. First of all, grammatically correct and sophisticated language patterns are stored better in the brain when they come in through the ears rather than through the eyes. You are hearing the words in order rather than your eyes skipping around the page as you read. Especially for younger children, listening to a story is much more satisfying than reading it because a child's listening ability and comprehension ability are typically well above their reading level. They can listen to, and understand, books that they may not be able to read yet.
