What Should Oliver Read Next?

Meow are you doing, everyone? It is I, Oliver, back once again with my next review! This recommendation comes from my good fur-end, Chloe. She recommended I give Meet the Bears: An Around the World Adventure a try. And wow! What a book! I never knew there were so many different types of bears in the world. I knew there were lots of different cats beclaws cats are pawsome like that. I got to learn about sun bears and sloth bears and even spectacled bears! Can you believe it? A bear with glasses, how hissterical! However, my favorite bear to read about were the polar bears. All that long, white majestic fur. Big, meaty paws with claws. Short little ears but still purrfect for hearing. Wait a meowment...am I?...GASP!...part polar bear!? No, no. That simply can’t be, I’ve never been to Alaska. And I can’t stand the cold. I prefer the warmth of sunbeams and human laps. No way could I be a polar bear. Furget it!

If you want to read more about all the amazing bears there are in the world (and to make sure you’re not one yourself), paw-lease stop by the children’s department to check out this fun book! Until next time, my fur-ends!

What Should Oliver Read Next?

Meowlo, again! It’s me, Oliver, here with another review! Today’s book comes from cool cat Cooper who recommended Paw Patrol: Mighty Pup Power! Wait...are you kitten me? A book about dogs? Oh boy, this is going to be one ruff read. The book starts with a litter-al bang when a meteor heads straight for Adventure Bay Beach. What a cat-astrophe! Luckily for the pups this meteorite came with surprise and gave them all superpowers! Chase has super speed, Everest can breathe ice, and Marshall gets heat paws. I also have heat paws but only after I have been sleeping on the heat register for several hours. However, it will take more than just fancy new powers for these puppies to defeat the pawful duo of Mayor Humdinger and Harold and their superpowered robot. While it may seem an impawsible task, with a little teamwork the pups are sure to save Adventure Bay once more.

Thank mew for stopping by and don’t fur-get to check out today’s recommended book at your local library! Until next time, stay pawsome!

Fast Five Fiction: Black History Month Recommendations

It's Friday and time for Fast Five Fiction! Each week I share five fiction books: new books, notable books, books around a common theme. All month long we've been celebrating Black History Month with various displays and book recommendations. Celebrate along with us by reading one of these fiction titles.

An American Story by Kwame Alexander

From the fireside tales in an African village, through the unspeakable passage across the Atlantic, to the backbreaking work in the fields of the South, this is a story of a people's struggle and strength, horror and hope. This is the story of American slavery, a story that needs to be told and understood by all of us. A testament to the resilience of the African American community, this book honors what has been and envisions what is to be.

With stunning mixed-media illustrations by Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winning artist Dare Coulter, this is a potent book for those who want to speak the truth. Perfect for family sharing, the classroom, and homeschooling.

Remember Us by Jacqueline Woodson

National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson brings readers a powerful story that delves deeply into life’s burning questions about time and memory and what we take with us into the future.

It seems like Sage’s whole world is on fire the summer before she starts seventh grade. As house after house burns down, her Bushwick neighborhood gets referred to as “The Matchbox” in the local newspaper. And while Sage prefers to spend her time shooting hoops with the guys, she’s also still trying to figure out her place inside the circle of girls she’s known since childhood. A group that each day, feels further and further away from her. But it’s also the summer of Freddy, a new kid who truly gets Sage. Together, they reckon with the pain of missing the things that get left behind as time moves on, savor what’s good in the present, and buoy each other up in the face of destruction. And when the future comes, it is Sage’s memories of the past that show her the way forward. Remember Us speaks to the power of both letting go . . . and holding on.

A child reflects on the meaning of being Black in this moving and powerful anthem about a people, a culture, a history, and a legacy that lives on.

Red is a rainbow color.
Green sits next to blue.
Yellow, orange, violet, indigo,
They are rainbow colors, too, but

My color is black . . .
And there’s no BLACK in rainbows.

From the wheels of a bicycle to the robe on Thurgood Marshall's back, Black surrounds our lives. It is a color to simply describe some of our favorite things, but it also evokes a deeper sentiment about the incredible people who helped change the world and a community that continues to grow and thrive.

Treasure Island: Runaway Gold by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Three kids. One dog. And the island of Manhattan, laid out in an old treasure map.

Zane is itching for an adventure that will take him away from his family's boarding house in Rockaway, Queens. So when he is entrusted with a real treasure map, leading to a spot somewhere in Manhattan, Zane wastes no time in riding the ferry over to the city to start the search with his friends Kiko and Jack and his dog, Hip-Hop.

Through strange coincidence, they meet a man who is eager to help them find the treasure: John, a sailor who knows all about the buried history of Black New Yorkers of centuries past--and the gold that is hidden somewhere in those stories.

As a vicious rival skateboard crew follows them around the city, Zane and his friends begin to wonder who they can really trust. And soon it becomes clear that treasure hunting is a dangerous business...

Jewell Parker Rhodes has written a version of Treasure Island like none you've never seen--one that takes the reader through little-known Black history, and under the city of Manhattan itself.

What Should Oliver Read Next?

Hi, everyone! It’s me, Oliver, here with my first ever recommended book review! Today’s review is for Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, recommended to me by the pawsome Lawton. Thanks for the recommendation, buddy! I loved this Pete the Cat book and not just beclaws I’m also a cat (okay, maybe a little). Like Pete, I also have white shoes. Paws count as shoes, right? And just like Pete, my shoes change color when I step into puddles much to the hisstress of my human. She really does not like my brown shoes especially when I wear them throughout the house. But Pete has taught me that I should keep on walking no matter what I step in, to love my shoes, and to remind my human that “it’s all good.”

Until next time, everyone!
