Fast Five Fiction: Mythology

It's Friday and time for Fast Five Fiction! Each week I share five fiction books: new books, notable books, books around a common theme. Our summer reading theme this year is Adventure Begins at your Library and we've got a ton of great books for readers of all ages. Each week we're adventuring through a different genre in children's department. This weeks theme is mythology so today I'm sharing

Heroes in Training series by Joan Holub and Tracey West

The terrible Titans—merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans—have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe. These early chapter books are perfect for elementary age students.

Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn

A young girl, a winged horse, and a war of epic proportions make for an adventurous start to this series.

When Pegasus crashes onto a Manhattan roof during a terrible storm, Emily’s life changes forever. Suddenly allied with a winged horse she’d always thought was mythical, Emily is thrust into the center of a fierce battle between the Roman gods and a terrifying race of multiarmed stone warriors called the Nirads. Emily must team up with a thief named Paelen, the goddess Diana, and a boy named Joel in order to return Pegasus to Olympus and rescue the gods from a certain death.

Along the way, Emily and her companions will fight monsters, run from a government agency that is prepared to dissect Pegasus, and even fly above the Manhattan skyline—all as part of a quest to save Olympus before time runs out.

Goddess Girls Graphic Novel Series by David Campiti

The Goddess Girls series are based on Greek mythology and depict the younger generation of Olympians as privileged tween students attending Mount Olympus Academy (MOA) to develop their divine skills.

The series focuses on four primary characters – Athena, Persephone, Aphrodite, and Artemis — as a diverse group of loyal friends. Athena is noted for her intelligence, Persephone is mysterious and kind, Artemis is bold and strong, and Aphrodite is "effortlessly beautiful". Holub writes about Athena and Artemis, Williams about Persephone and Aphrodite.

Zeus is represented as the principal of the academy, and many other gods, including Hades, Poseidon, and Ares, appear in the series. Pandora, Medusa, and Heracles appear as mortal characters.
The series includes deities and characters from other mythological traditions as visitors to the academy.

Dragon Masters series by Tracey West

Dragon Masters is a fantasy series that takes place in a world where dragons and magic are real. If you are eight years old, you can be chosen by the magical Dragon Stone to be paired with a dragon. Dragon Masters and their dragons work together to discover each dragon’s special powers. Then the Dragon Masters team up to solve problems, save their land from villains, and go on adventures.

Mini Myths by Joan Holub

The Mini Myths board book series puts a modern spin on ancient Greek mythology for preschoolers. Leslie Patricelli’s depictions of the physical comedy bring a lively visual narrative to Joan Holub’s expertly focused text. Each book includes a short summary of the original myth at the end. Perfect for babies, toddlers, and even early elementary students.

Happy Friday and happy reading!
